  4.     Nearly three years after the world's worst civilian nuclear
  5. disaster, Mikhail Gorbachev made his first visit to Chernobyl last
  6. week. The Soviet leader seemed intent on cleaning up the continuing
  7. environmental and political fallout from the accident. Soviet
  8. newspapers in recent weeks have reported the births of deformed
  9. farm animals and widespread radioactive contamination of land and
  10. food. Local workers surrounded Gorbachev to tell him of their worry
  11. about the health consequences.

  13.     Clad in a white coat and cap, a sympathetic Gorbachev and his
  14. wife Raisa inspected the reopened facility, in the shadow of the
  15. entombed reactor No. 4, and stopped to ask the plant's staff about
  16. new safety measures. Gorbachev called the Chernobyl accident "very
  17. serious for the whole world," adding, "Through science and
  18. technology, we need to give energy to the nation, but safety
  19. remains the most important thing." Forty-eight hours later, the
  20. first unit of a twelve-year-old nuclear-power plant in Armenia was
  21. shut down. Under public pressure, authorities conceded that the
  22. operation was too risky in the earthquake zone.
